(1) CHARLES BOWLING SCHOLARSHIP

Sponsored by the KANAWHA VALLEY MINING INSTITUTE, INC.
ONE TIME AWARD - Applied for Annually

The KANAWHA VALLEY MINING INSTITUTE provides several scholarships each year to deserving college students selected by a committee comprised of the Directors of the Institute. The students should have completed their first year of study in an accredited program leading to a degree in a discipline related to needs of the mining industry. It can include a broad range of fields such as engineering studies, technology studies, computer sciences, accounting, and other similar studies.
An application for a scholarship should be completed and submitted to either a scholarship coordinator at the College or University or it may be submitted directly to the Institute.

An application may be obtained by downloading it from one of the links below or by contacting a Director of the Institute on the Officers & Directors Page at the link on this page.

Applications are accepted during the months of October and November.
Applications must be submitted by December 1 of the applicable year.
Awards are usually made in early February.

Administered by the GREATER KANAWHA VALLEY FOUNDATION
This scholarship is awarded to a high school senior and can be renewed for four years, if the student maintains his/her full time student status and maintains a GPA of 2.7. More details of the program may be reviewed at the following link:

2017 -2018 KVMI ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Zachary Boggess

Sissonville High School - Sissonville, Kanawha County WV
Presented by Frank Pearson

Congratulations to our 2017 Endowed Scholarship Recipient Mr. Zachary Boggess of Kenna, WV. Zachary graduated from Sissonville High School with a cumulative GPA of 4.586 ranking 4th of 168 graduates. Zachary faces all challenges head on with motivation and determination to achieve success. He has excelled academically and in athletics since an early age. His graduating honors include eligibility for the Promise Scholarship, National Honor Society, First Team All Conference and All State Honorable Mention in baseball. Zachary will be attending Marshall University in the fall pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree.

Our organization is extremely proud to again be able to assist such a deserving and promising student with our scholarship. Frank Pearson, Vice President presented the scholarship to Zachary during the awards ceremony held at Sissonville High School.


2016 -2017 KVMI ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Jacob Burkhammer

Poca High School - Poca, Putnam County WV

Our recent scholarship winner is a senior at Poca High School who will be pursuing a Mechanical Engineering Degree at Marshall University. Jacob maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.89 and graduated in the top 4% of his class. He participates in his community, his church, and many charitable functions. He has strong leadership skills serving as President of the student body and captain and quarterback of the football team. He has a strong work ethic having numerous employment positions while attending high school. In his “spare time” he tutors children in math. He demonstrates a “never give up” attitude in approaching difficult situations and challenges. Among his graduating honors include a Presidential Scholarship from Marshall University, the National Honor Society, eligibility for the Promise Scholarship, and the Distinguished Athlete Award from the United States Marine Corps.

The Kanawha Valley Mining Institute is again proud to find such a promising and deserving student for our scholarship program.

The Captain of the Woodrow Wilson wrestling team, Caleb Barley is a self-driven young man that does not hesitate to accept challenges and strives to succeed in all aspects of his life. He is very active in youth wrestling, community, church, and volunteer activities. Working at Food Lion, he still finds time to make the National Honor Society, Academic all-state in Wrestling three straight years, maintain a 3.94 GPA, and achieve a Promise Scholarship. Caleb has his sights on a Mechanical Engineering degree at WVU –Institute of Technology.

The Kanawha Valley Mining Institute is proud to contribute to the opportunity for this young man and leader of the future to continue his quest for excellence.
